Theta Symbol (θ / Θ): How to Type, Copy, and Use It

The theta symbol, θ (lowercase) and Θ (capital), is the Greek letter that means “the angle.” In trigonometry, sin θ and cos θ use it the way algebra uses x — as the stand-in for an unknown angle. It also shows up in brain waves, options trading, and statistics. It isn’t on an English keyboard, so most people copy it or use a shortcut. This page has both, plus what theta means across all those fields and its surprisingly dark history.

If you just need the symbol, copy θ (or the script ϑ) from the grid below. If you want the shortcuts and the meanings, the sections below cover both.

In a hurry?

  • Copy it: click θ in the grid below.
  • On Windows: hold Alt and type 952 for θ (920 for Θ).
  • In Word: type 03B8 then press Alt + X for θ.
  • Angle in trig: θ is the conventional symbol for an unknown angle.
  • In HTML: write θ (or θ).

None of these are on a standard keyboard, so each takes a shortcut, a code, or a copy. The sections below cover each device, then why theta means “angle” and everything else it stands for.

How to type the theta symbol on any device

Type θ on Windows

Use the Alt code: turn on Num Lock, hold Alt, and type 952 on the numeric keypad for θ, or 920 for the capital Θ. On a laptop with no keypad, press Windows + . and search “theta.”

Type θ on Mac

The Mac has no dedicated theta key. Open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space and search “theta,” or add a Greek keyboard in System Settings, where θ sits on the U key.

Type θ on iPhone and Android

Add a Greek keyboard in settings, where theta is available; otherwise copy it from the grid above. Scientific-calculator and maths keyboards usually include θ, which is handy since it’s the standard angle symbol.

Type θ in Microsoft Word

Type 03B8 then press Alt + X for θ (use 0398 for Θ). Or use Insert → Symbol, where the Greek letters are listed. In the equation editor (Alt + =), \theta and \Theta work.

Type θ on Linux

Press Ctrl + Shift + U, type 03b8, then Enter for θ (0398 for Θ). A Greek keyboard layout also gives you theta.

Add θ in HTML and CSS

In HTML, θ is θ (lowercase) or Θ (capital), or the numeric θ. In CSS, a θ in a content value is the escaped code point \03B8.

θ is the angle: why theta means angles in trig

If algebra has x for an unknown number, trigonometry has θ for an unknown angle. When you write sin θ, cos θ, or tan θ, the θ is simply “the angle we’re talking about.” It’s the default label for an angle the way x is the default for a variable — so ingrained that a diagram often marks an angle with just a θ and no explanation.

Why theta specifically? It goes back to older mathematical convention, where Greek letters were used for angles to keep them visually separate from the Latin letters used for lengths and coordinates. Theta became the first choice, with φ (phi) and α, β, γ as the usual back-ups when a problem has more than one angle. So in a right triangle you’ll see the sides labelled with letters like a, b, c and the angle labelled θ — a quiet division of labour that’s been standard for centuries. Whenever you see θ in maths or physics, your first guess should be “that’s an angle.”

The two lowercase thetas: θ and the script ϑ

Like sigma, theta has two lowercase shapes. The everyday one is θ, a circle with a horizontal bar. There’s also a script or cursive variant, ϑ (U+03D1), sometimes called the “theta symbol,” which looks more like a curly, open form. Unlike the sigma case, the two aren’t governed by a position rule — they’re just stylistic variants of the same letter.

In practice, they’re used interchangeably, and which one appears often comes down to the font rather than a deliberate choice. Some mathematicians use ϑ to mean a different quantity from θ within the same document (a handy way to have two related angles), but there’s no universal rule. For almost everything, the plain θ is what you want; the script ϑ is in the grid above for the rare time you need to tell two thetas apart or match a particular typographic style.

Theta everywhere: brain waves, options, and temperature

Angles are just theta’s day job. The letter turns up across the sciences and finance, each field giving it a specific meaning. In neuroscience, theta waves are brain waves in the 4–8 Hz range, linked to light sleep, deep relaxation, and meditation, which is why “theta state” appears in meditation apps. In options trading, theta (θ) is one of “the Greeks”: it measures time decay, how much an option loses in value with each passing day.

Elsewhere, θ is potential temperature in meteorology, a parameter to be estimated in statistics and machine learning (models are full of θ), a plane angle in physics, and even a type of join (the “theta join”) in databases. The thread is that θ marks a quantity that varies. Its cousins pi, delta, and sigma play similar roles, covered in the [pi symbol](/pi-symbol/), [delta symbol](/delta-symbol/), and [sigma symbol](/sigma-symbol/) guides.

The ‘death’ letter: theta’s dark history

Here’s the piece of history almost nobody knows: to the ancient Greeks and Romans, theta was the letter of death. Because theta is the first letter of thanatos (θάνατος), the Greek word for death, it became a grim shorthand. On military rolls and in records, a θ was written beside the name of someone who had died, a practice sometimes called the theta nigrum, the “black theta.”

Roman jurors are said to have used it too: a θ on a tablet could signal a vote for a death sentence, the way we might imagine a thumbs-down. The letter’s shape, a circle cut by a bar, a little like a sealed tomb, reinforced the association. So the same friendly symbol that labels an angle in your maths homework once marked the dead on a casualty list, a reminder that these letters carry two and a half thousand years of baggage.

θ vs 0, ∅, and ø: the circle-with-a-line look-alikes

Theta joins a family of characters that are all a circle with something through it, and they get mixed up constantly. The theta θ has a horizontal bar. A slashed zero (used to tell zero from the letter O) has a diagonal slash. The empty set ∅ (U+2205) is a circle with a diagonal slash meaning a set with nothing in it. The Scandinavian letter ø is a lowercase o with a slash. Five different characters; if a θ looks wrong, check whether you’ve grabbed a slashed zero or an empty set.

θ in URLs and encoding

In a URL, θ is percent-encoded as %CE%B8 (its two UTF-8 bytes); capital Θ is %CE%98. In code, the string escape is \u03B8 for θ and \u0398 for Θ. If θ ever shows as garbled characters or a box, serve the page as UTF-8.

In a CSS content value, use \03B8 for θ. For its Greek-letter siblings, see the [sigma symbol](/sigma-symbol/), [omega symbol](/omega-symbol/), and [delta symbol](/delta-symbol/) guides, and the [math symbols Alt codes](/math-symbols-on-keyboard-alt-codes/) reference.

Troubleshooting

My θ shows as a box or garbled text

That’s an encoding mismatch: the UTF-8 bytes for θ are being read as an older encoding. Set the file, database, and page charset to UTF-8 and θ displays correctly.

My theta looks like a zero

You may have a slashed zero (diagonal line) instead of theta (horizontal bar). Copy the correct θ from the grid above, or type 03B8 then Alt + X in Word.

Alt + 952 isn’t working

That decimal code needs app support. If it fails, type 03B8 then Alt + X in Word, use the Character Viewer on a Mac, or copy θ from the grid above.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type the theta symbol θ?

On Windows, hold Alt and type 952 on the numpad, or type 03B8 then Alt + X in Word. On a Mac, open the Character Viewer (Control + Command + Space) and search theta. On phones, add a Greek keyboard, or just copy θ from the grid above.

What does the theta symbol mean?

In math θ almost always stands for an angle, especially in trigonometry and polar coordinates. In statistics it often marks an unknown parameter to be estimated. It’s the eighth letter of the Greek alphabet.

What is the difference between θ and ϑ?

They’re the same letter. θ is the standard lowercase theta; ϑ (U+03D1) is a script or cursive variant used in some fonts and older texts. They mean the same thing, so use the plain θ unless a source specifically calls for the script form.

What is the capital theta Θ used for?

Capital Θ (U+0398) appears in computer science as big-theta notation, which bounds an algorithm’s running time from both above and below. Type it on Windows with Alt + 920.

Why is theta linked to death?

In ancient Athens theta was the first letter of thanatos, death, and was marked next to the names of the condemned. Roman writers called it the theta nigrum, the dark theta, an early ancestor of the modern skull symbol.
