One symbol, three ways to copy

Use the switch above the grid to copy the character itself, its web-ready HTML entity, or a CSS escape — handy when you are pasting into a page or a stylesheet instead of a document. Here is the right arrow in all three:

Symbol

The plain character. Paste it into Word, Google Docs, social posts, or a chat.

HTML

→

The numeric entity. Drop it straight into web page source and it renders as →.

CSS

\2192

The escape code. Use it in a content property, like content:"\2192".

Questions

What is the difference between copying as Symbol, HTML, and CSS?

Symbol copies the character itself for documents and chat. HTML copies its numeric entity (like →) for web page source. CSS copies the escape code (like \2192) for use in a content property.

Why does a symbol turn into a box (▯) when I paste it?

That box means the font you pasted into does not include that character. Switch the receiving app to a fuller font like Arial, Segoe UI, or Noto, or pick a more widely supported symbol.

Do these count as one character in a tweet or text?

Most plain symbols count as one. Emoji and a few decorative characters are built from several code units, so they can eat into a tweet or SMS limit more than they look like they should.

Can I use these in a filename or username?

Stick to letters, numbers, and simple marks. Many sites strip decorative symbols from usernames, and operating systems block characters like / \ : * ? in filenames.

Are these symbols free to use?

Yes. Every character here is part of the open Unicode standard, so you can use them anywhere — personal, commercial, or schoolwork — at no cost.
